CENTRE-DU-QUÉBEC

The region was developed around the fertile lands stretching from the St. Lawrence River to the Appalachians. Today it includes close to a third of the entire milk production in Québec, which explains the presence of 16 cheese factories. Cranberries are also a regional specialty with over 88% of Québec producers occupying 92% of the cranberry growing areas in the province.

Centre-du-Québec features a wide variety of agri-food products as well as many producers who have developed skills they are eager to share. The extent of the dairy industry, the number of cheese factories, the fame of the Cheese Festival, and the presence of the La Maison des fromages restaurant in Warwick have made cheese the driving force of the agri-food industry in Centre-du-Québec.

Cranberries are also at the forefront thanks to the Centre d’interprétation de la canneberge (Cranberry interpretation centre) in St-Louis-de-Blandford and the Festival de la canneberge (Cranberry festival) in Villeroy. In addition, several other products are part of the array of tasty findings available in the region. These include maple products celebrated at a festival in Plessisville and in a number of sugar houses (Ti-Père, Les P’tits Prince, La Reine des Érables), apples (www.vergerduhaime.com, Verger des Bois-Francs in Princeville), wine (www.vignoblegavet.com, Vignoble Ste-Eulalie), geese at Baie-du-Febvre , buckwheat (www.becancour.net/moulinmichel), and others.

Guided visits of animal farms are also available for visitors. Businesses such as the L’Angélaine goat house, Ferme du Bassin, which has more than 1000 animals of 100 different species and Cerfs Du-Bé at St-Louis-de-Blandford are in this niche.  Those interested in ornamental horticulture can enjoy guided visits in specialized businesses such as Rose Drummond, the largest producer of roses in Québec the Bonsaï Nursery, which is the most extensive bonsai growing operation in Canada Marie-Victorin Park and L’Armoire aux herbes to name but a few.

Producers who offer farm visits and sell their products in stands can be found throughout the various territories of Centre-du-Québec. Some also do business in the fall during the Balade gourmande event in October (www.tourismeboisfrancs.com/PagesFr/automne.htm ) or during the period when public markets are open (www.produits-regionaux.qc.ca/drummond, http://www.marchegodefroy.com/).

Come meet the agri-food specialists of Centre-du-Québec and delight your senses with a taste of their products.
