In early spring, sap streams from the maple trees for the production of unique products typical of the region. As the weather gets warmer, seeds are sown and fields turn green. One after the other, from west to east, the regions begin to display their blossoms in the orchards and the first field vegetable becomes available: asparagus. Animals are more visible. Horticultural centres bring their pots of flowering plants out of their greenhouses and into the sunshine.
The warmth of the summer sun colours the fields of Québec yellow, white and blue, or depending on the crops, brings on an explosion of nutritious, delicious fruits and vegetables, and ears of corn begin to emerge. It’s the perfect season for a quick visit to Québec’s agricultural producers. You can start by sampling products made from early crops, picnicking and taking advantage of the longer days to enjoy a meal in the open air.
Picking apples in fall is surely a family tradition. Pumpkins are also waiting to be picked, and children love to choose just the right one to decorate their porches at Halloween. This is also the season for harvesting grapes, resulting in great wines, ciders and other fruit-based beverages. Why not try participating in the spectacular cranberry harvest? And above all, it’s such fun as a family to be preparing, concocting and tasting the delicious provisions for the winter.
Winter is the quietest time for agritourism activities, but it’s still good to get outdoors for a breath of fresh air, and admire the dazzling whiteness of snow-covered fields. Come and see the animals too – sheep with their newborn lambs, cows and their calves; at the same time, you can enjoy a wonderful meal and sample fine products such as ice cider.
